Silver Bandits appoint Rothermel team’s CEO

Wednesday, July 12, 2000 | 10:21 a.m.

Former UNLV athletic director Dr. Brad Rothermel has been named chief executive officer of the International Basketball League's Las Vegas Silver Bandits.

Rothermel will oversee sponsorships and corporate development and will also be a management consultant.

Considered the most successful athletic administrator in UNLV history, Rothermel oversaw the UNLV athletic department from 1981-91 and was on board for the UNLV basketball team's 1990 national championship.

Rothermel was the point man for ABA 2000's negotiations to put a franchise in Las Vegas. But when that plan stalled -- the Silver Bandits were a box office flop in their first year, giving little credence to the notion that two non-NBA pro league franchises could survive in Las Vegas -- Rothermel formed an alliance with Jackie Robinson, the former UNLV standout who recently took over ownership of the Silver Bandits.
