Federal grant will help caregivers

Family members caring for Alzheimer's patients may soon receive temporary financial assistance.

The Alzheimer's Associations of Southern and Northern Nevada and the state's Division of Aging Services received a $1 million grant this month from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The grant is a demonstration grant and will be awarded over a three-year period to provide temporary financial assistance to Nevadans caring for Alzheimer's patients.

This is the first time such a grant has been awarded to the state agency and the associations.

Bar association sponsoring drive

The Community Service Committee of the Clark County Bar Association is sponsoring a drive for school supplies.

Local schools are in need of supplies, including pencils, pens, three-hole paper, photocopy paper, glue, computers and more.

Help cancer patients

The American Cancer Society needs volunteers to drive cancer patients to and from their treatment centers. As part of the organization's Road to Recovery program, volunteers are paired with cancer patients to provide transportation a minimum of one hour a month. Call Jeanette at 798-6877, Ext. 228.

Cerebral palsy support

The Cerebral Palsy Foundation seeks families who have children from birth through age 14 affected with cerebral palsy. The foundation is offering support groups, fun family activities, information, financial and emotional support, clothes and furniture, car seats and many other services. Call 740-5501.

Annual awards breakfast scheduled

Opportunity Village will host its 46th annual awards breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at 6300 W. Oakey Blvd.

The ceremony will honor those who have made valuable contributions to Opportunity Village in the preceding year.

Awards are given yearly to local residents and companies who make significant contributions through volunteerism, in-kind contributions and advocacy for people with disabilities.

Recreation center to offer workshops

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor two floral centerpiece design workshops: 9:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday at the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., and 4-6:30 p.m. July 26 at the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.

Participation is $20 for either workshop. For more information, call 565-2121.

Landscape retrofit classes

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is sponsoring landscape retrofit classes to be held 6:30-9 p.m. beginning Thursday at the Desert Demonstration Gardens, 3701 W. Alta Drive, for eight weeks. For more information, call Mel Hengen at 294-4278 or 222-3130.
