Letter: GOP, as usual, spews rhetoric
Tuesday, July 11, 2000 | 9:26 a.m.
On Social Security, they claim it is a "communist" idea for the government to tax people to give money to Wall Street to provide retirement benefits! (privatization)
They claim that it is "socialism" for the government to tax people to provide for their health care (single payer system) but it is "capitalistic" to tax people in order to give money to insurance companies to provide for their health care! (vouchers)
The same self-serving contradictions are found throughout most GOP proposals -- the death penalty and "right to life" positions taken by the party is one -- claiming to represent working people, while diligently working to abolish or at least weaken unions. How about giving tax cuts to billionaires while denying prescription drug coverage to senior couples making $17,000 a year? (the just-passed GOP "prescription coverage" for Medicare)
They are trying to work both sides of the street but in the end (post-election) they walk only the mean side!
