Henderson council faces busy schedule
Tuesday, July 11, 2000 | 10:06 a.m.
After a relaxed Fourth of July week, when few city employees braved municipal office life, Henderson City Council members are catching up on lost time.
The city representatives will meet two weeks in a row to get back up to speed on the city's business.
Council members will consider an appeal tonight to locate a major shopping strip along Lake Mead Drive near its intersection with Pecos Road.
The proposal -- which includes numerous service stations, restaurants and at least one tavern -- was rejected by the Henderson Planning Commission in May after commissioners determined that too many changes were being made on the spur of the moment.
Objections of more than 30 area residents at the meeting didn't help the developer's effort.
Planning Commission Chairman George Bochanis suggested in May the developer draft a new proposal reflecting the changes.
Instead an appeal was filed with the City Council.
Along with the Pecos Road development, the council will hear any concerns over a pending annexation of 5,500 acres southwest of the Henderson Executive Airport on the western edge of the city.
Council members Tuesday are also expected to appoint a replacement for Kenneth Lamb to the Planning Commission. Lamb resigned last month and plans to move to Utah.
A tentative agenda for the July 18 meeting has the council considering a zone change for new condominiums to be built at Lake Las Vegas. The project has been approved by the Planning Commission. Residents who are opposed complain of plans to raise the ground beneath the project by 40 feet.
The council will further consider renaming a portion of Lake Mead Drive near Pecos Road to Saint Rose Parkway in honor of the new hospital opening in that area. One of the council's last actions on the 5,500-acre annexation of unincorporated county lands on Henderson's western boundary, a bill finalizing the action, is set to be approved.
Also, street and sidewalk improvements for the Pittman area are tentatively scheduled to be discussed.
