Olympic ski trails to get $15,000 restoration

David Antonucci, who's heading the effort to restore the nearly 40 miles of trails here on Lake Tahoe's west shore, said the $15,000 will be used for trail signs and maps.
"It's mainly to fund the hard cost we might incur. It's a very simple project," he said, adding many of the trails only need to be cleared and maintained.
"We want the trails to be open and in use this winter, and we still think we can do that."
Antonucci is aiming for a February 2001 rededication of the trails to coincide with their original use during the 1960 Winter Olympics.
Although nearby Squaw Valley was the host of the Olympics, the cross-country skiing competition was held in the Homewood area.
Antonucci is talking with landowners whose property is crossed by the trails about the project. Agreements must be made as to what kind of work is to be done.
"Some are much more receptive than others," he said.
