The Sun Remembers 1950: Recalling Tony Martin at the Flamingo

Friday, July 7, 2000 | 10:32 a.m.

Tony Martin, now in his late 80s, was a true night club troubadour and a star of films, recordings, radio and television from the 1930s well into the 1990s, last headlining here several times in the 1990s at Bob Stupak's Vegas World, now the Stratosphere.

His record of "Begin The Beguine," coupled with "September Song," was a No. 1 record in the 1940s. The Flamingo emcee, Gene Wesson, was also part of the Wesson Brothers comedy act. Frakson the Magician, the Kurt Jons Dancers and the Matty Malneck Orchestra completed the Flamingo bill. Hal Borne, his conductor at the Flamingo in 1950, conducted for him at Vegas World in the mid-1990s.
