Letter: Uncaring driver left dog to die

Friday, July 7, 2000 | 10:02 a.m.

On June 10 my husband and I were traveling eastbound on Lone Mountain Road, just east of Jones Boulevard. Two dogs were running loose on the south side of Lone Mountain.

Unfortunately, the dogs ran out onto Lone Mountain, and one was hit by a driver headed west. The driver didn't stop, he didn't even slow down.

The police officers who stopped to render assistance said there is no law against striking an animal and leaving the scene. There should be. Although it was wrong that the dogs were loose, it was morally indecent that the driver didn't stop to help or, at the very least, comfort the animal.

The dog died in my arms in a pool of blood. If you hit an animal, please do what you can to help. Use your cell phone to call animal control or, without putting yourself in jeopardy, take the animal to the nearest animal hospital. If nothing else, stop. By the way, the dog's name was Marty.
