Letter: Sad to see Wynn destroying DI
Friday, July 7, 2000 | 10:02 a.m.
I was disappointed to hear that Steve Wynn is going to bulldoze the Desert Inn and tear up the golf course to build more hotels. I think the Desert Inn has the nicest, best laid-out casino on the Strip. And the new property sounds like just another Wynn hotel, with it's Y-shaped structure, poorly laid-out casino, and a large body of water.
I have been coming to Las Vegas for years and I am unhappy with Wynn's proposal to gut the DI. If he needs more rooms, build another tower. More casino floor space? Expand the casino. Before long, Las Vegas Boulevard will be renamed Wynn Street and will be lined with what he thinks is classy architecture.
I don't care for his other properties on the Strip and I cringe every time he talks about his plans for the DI property. I can't stand to think of him building three or four more Treasure Island-type resorts. And he's going to tear out a PGA tournament-level golf course to build a water stadium? I can't believe it! In any event, It will be sad to see the DI go the way of the Sands.
