National, America West airlines to fly nonstop Washington, D.C.

Wednesday, July 5, 2000 | 10:54 a.m.

National Airlines and American West have received two of six new round-trip slots from McCarran International Airport to Washington's Reagan National Airport, the Transportation Department announced Wednesday.

It was not immediately known when the Las Vegas-based National Airlines or America West would begin nonstop service from McCarran to the nation's capitol.

Officials say McCarran will be the only airport with two carriers receiving the new service.

"This is great news for Southern Nevada's tourism industry. It provides a new service for a large, but under utilized market," said Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., who has worked with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to suspend the perimeter rule for flights going to and from Washington, D.C.

By law, airlines were not allowed to fly nonstop any further than 1,250 miles in or out of Washington's national airport.

"We had a partial victory," Bryan said.
