There will be little time for incoming freshmen Brandon Askew, James Oh and Travis Whisman to ease into college competition, because the newest additions to the UNLV golf team will be relied upon to help the team immediately.
UNLV put the finishing touches on its 2000 fall schedule with the announcement it will participate in the College Golf Foundation Match Play Team Championships at the West Bay Golf Club in Esotero, Fla., Nov. 10-12.
The Rebels earned the invitation because of their sixth-place finish at the 2000 NCAA Golf Championships and their No. 7 final ranking in the CGF MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. The event will feature eight of the country's top 10 teams, according to the final 2000 rankings.
Five members of each team will play singles matches to determine the winning team. The winners will advance while the losing teams will go into a consolation bracket. Each team is guaranteed three matches.
The field will also include No. 1 Georgia Tech, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Houston, No. 5 Northwestern, No. 6 Arizona, No. 8 Texas and No. 9 Georgia.
The Match Play Championships will conclude a five-event fall schedule for UNLV.
UNLV will open the year on Sept. 14 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., site of UNLV's 1998 national championship.
The team then will get to preview the site of the 2001 NCAA championships when it competes in the Golfweek/PING Preview Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club Sept. 23-26.
