No fireworks, booze or two-stroke engines at Tahoe this holiday

Tuesday, July 4, 2000 | 10:51 a.m.

People planning to relax at Lake Tahoe this holiday will have to do it without fireworks, alcohol or two-stroke engines.

With the population along the south shore alone exploding from around 22,000 to an expected 130,000 and a fire danger that's high to extreme, police and fire officials will be out in full force.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department will have extra patrol units out to make sure nobody tries to shoot off any fireworks.

Police will have a zero-tolerance approach to alcohol.

South Lake Tahoe Police Sergeant Steve O'Brien said that if it looks like beer or another alcoholic beverage or they can smell it, they'll have the person dump it out or issue a citation.

Police say Stateline will be the most congested area. The Stateline beach corridor will be closed to vehicles but open for pedestrians.

City police plan to coordinate their efforts with El Dorado County Sheriff's Department and have foot, horse and bike patrols working until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The pyromusical "Lights on the Lake 2000" starts at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday night. The fireworks display will be launched from a floating dock near Stateline and can be seen from most beaches in South Lake Tahoe.
