Letter: Nepotism not only in schools
Monday, July 3, 2000 | 8:45 a.m.
Imagine my surprise -- I thought only the Bureau of Land Management in Nevada was guilty of this practice. The guilty parties always have a "justification" for hiring their relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. Why do these "justifications" only apply to certain hires and not everybody? Nepotism in the workplace creates a hostile and demoralizing work environment. One has to be careful what they say and do in front of the "relatives and friends" of management.
Co-workers wonder whether they are being treated equally, paid equally, and given promotions and positions fairly. Yes, the federal government has rules against management influencing the hiring of relatives and friends, but BLM in Nevada is full of these "hires," and management always has a "justification."
If the public thinks nepotism is only happening in the education arena, please be advised it's rampant within the federal government in Nevada also. I would suggest that the BLM in Nevada trade its nepotism hires with the college-university system's nepotism hires and perhaps they won't risk being exposed or having to field embarrassing questions.
