Nevada awarded $2.6 million grant
The Department of Justice will award Nevada more than $2.6 million to help support the crime-victim compensation program.
The fund is financed by fines and penalties paid by convicted federal criminals. Funds will be used to pay claims for medical costs, lost wages, mental health counseling, funeral expenses and other costs victims incur as the result of violent crimes.
One-car crash kills NLV man
A 37-year-old North Las Vegas man was killed Saturday in a one-car accident in the 2400 block of Simmons Street near Carey Avenue.
Willie R. Lewis apparently lost control of his 1988 Oldsmobile sedan about 1:35 p.m., North Las Vegas Police said. The car slid sideways off the road, striking a light pole and a small power box. The car then overturned, striking a larger power relay box and briefly knocking out power, police said.
Lewis was trapped inside the car, but investigators said they believe he died on impact.
