Independence Day commemorates the July 4, 1776, adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress. The Revolutionary War did not end until the British surrendered at Yorktown, Pa., on Oct. 19, 1781. Here's what is open on Tuesday:
* SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
* UTILITIES: Closed: Sprint, Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Communications cable TV.
* GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.
* SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District's year-round schools and summer classes for Community College of Southern Nevada and UNLV.
* MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service and United Parcel Service.
* NEWSPAPER: Sun combined morning editions with Review-Journal. Sun offices closed.
* TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (two trolleys in operation instead of three). Citizens Area Transit: Holiday schedule (fewer buses in operation on fixed routes).
* LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City Municipal.
* GARBAGE: Silver State Disposal pickups as usual.
* MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 8 a.m. today to midnight Tuesday.
* FINANCES: Closed: banks, brokerage firms.
* ZOO: Open: Southern Nevada Zoological and Botanical Park.
* PARKING: City parking metered spaces are free.
