Girl found day after leaving campsite

Monday, July 3, 2000 | 8:49 a.m.

A 9-year-old girl missing for nearly 24 hours in the Spring Mountains was found Sunday afternoon dehydrated but otherwise OK.

Search and Rescue personnel found Elizabeth Jones in the Macks Canyon area near state Route 156, about nine miles from where her family had been camping, according to Metro Police.

The family noticed the girl missing about 4 p.m. Saturday.

A helicopter was called about 7 p.m. Along with bloodhounds, the helicopter searched the region throughout the night. Sunday morning, more dogs and two more helicopters were brought in. Searchers also traversed the area on horseback, said Metro Lt. Dwight Mahan.

After she was found, the girl told reporters that she got lost after running away from a fox.

The incident was the third time in the past month that a child has become lost in the area, Mahan said.

"These are city kids, and they go 100 feet in the woods and they get disoriented very quickly," he said.
