City signs mutual assistance pact with federal hospital

Monday, July 3, 2000 | 10:16 a.m.

Imagine a disaster in North Las Vegas: An intense fire roars through the city, and the local fire department can't handle on its own. Or a wayward aircraft slams into an apartment complex injuring dozens who can't find room at the local hospital.

In case of an emergency that taxes North Las Vegas' medical capacity, the city has signed an agreement with the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital at Nellis Air Force Base stating that it will assist with medical care.

And respectively, if there is an emergency at Nellis that overwhelms its capabilities, the city will step in to assist.

The city has had an agreement with Nellis for the last five years to provide mutual assistance. The agreement approved last week is the first to include medical services.

"The agreement is in place to bet on the odds that we don't need them," Fire Chief Robert Dodge said.
