Melbourne GP to kick off 2001 F1 season a week early

Ron Walker, Australian Grand Prix Corporation chairman, said Sunday that the season-opening race would break with a five-year tradition of running the second weekend of March, which coincides with other festivals in the city.

Walker said FIA, the world governing body for auto racing, released a provisional calendar for the 2001 season with the opening race listed during the first weekend in March.

He said that while the schedule would not be completely confirmed until October or November, Formula One administration boss Bernie Ecclestone was committed to the March 4 slot.
