Letter: Illegal workers help economy

Sunday, July 2, 2000 | 10:45 a.m.

Nonetheless this segment of our community, particularly the much-maligned illegal aliens who endure discrimination and harassment by unscrupulous employers, have and are contributing to our economic growth and prosperity. In fact, the AFL-CIO and business leaders recently pushed Congress to grant general amnesty to illegal workers as well as to repeal the law which makes it a crime for an employer to hire an undocumented worker.

Despite what disgruntled xenophobes may think or say about our demographic changes, immigrants are business owners, investors, workers, taxpayers and consumers. Most national economists would agree on this point. Mr. O'Callaghan and the Las Vegas Interfaith Council should be applauded for addressing this matter.
