Survey says residents willing to pay to save Lake Tahoe

Monday, Jan. 31, 2000 | 9:16 a.m.

The survey was conducted to try to gauge public opinion on how to raise local money for environmental programs scientists say are needed to keep Tahoe's waters blue.

"A regional source of environmental funding is an absolute necessity for securing the rest of the help we need from the federal government and the states," said Rochelle Nason, executive director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

Specifics of the survey were not immediately released.

But TRPA spokeswoman Pam Drum said residents gave "unqualified support" for the idea of some sort of basin impact feet, but opposed charging a toll to enter the Tahoe Basin.

Those polled also favored a sales tax increase in the Tahoe Basin as opposed to a gasoline tax increase in their own counties, she said.

"Generally speaking, there was very good support for them to participate in some form of payment scheme," Drum said.
