Black-tie fundraiser will benefit children
The "Believe in Angels" black-tie fund-raiser to benefit Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer of Southern Nevada will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the Four Seasons hotel-casino.
This year honorees are longtime Candlelighter supporter Norm Jenkins and cancer survivor children Felicia Krouse and Gabriel Lopez. This second annual black-tie event will include a cocktail hour, a silent and live auction, dinner, an awards presentation and dancing to the Angel Star Orchestra. Tickets are $200.
Physics professor to speak on space exploration
UNLV Physics Professor Donna Weistrop will present an illustrated-lecture on "Recent Observations With the Hubble Space Telescope: Colliding Galaxies and Active Galaxy Nuclei" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7. The lecture will be held at UNLV in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.
Radio exam offered at Henderson campus
An FCC-approved amateur radio exam will be given noon Saturday at the Community College of Southern Nevada Henderson campus, 700 College Drive, Henderson.

Social group hosting a day on the slopes
Accent Social and Ski Club of Las Vegas, a nonprofit group, is offering a ski trip Friday through Sunday. It includes two nights' lodging with hot tub and two lift tickets for $58 total cost. Three free tanning session passes and a $10 ski tune-up for all new members is included in the package.

Black History Month festivities are scheduled
Women of Diversity Productions, Inc., a Nevada-based, nonprofit corporation, is sponsoring "Remembering the Freedoms" in celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 12-13.
It will be directed by member Kim Russell and co-sponsored by the Las Vegas, Clark County Library System, the International House of Blues Foundation and Women of Diversity. For more information, call Fay Klein at 341-9807.
Girls Scouts seek donations for the disabled
Girl Scouts of Frontier Council is seeking gently used clothing and household items from family, friends and neighbors to be donated to valley residents with disabilities and other special needs so they may join the work force.
The scouts delivered empty donation bags this month to their families, friends and neighbors and will collect them in February.
The project, called Good Turn Days, runs through Feb. 25 and is a source of revenue for the vocational services programs at Goodwill of Southern Nevada, Inc.

Leader of nature group to hold talk
Bruce Lund, the Moapa Valley community coordinator for The Nature Conservancy, will discuss why public agencies, conservation organizations and rural communities are often at odds with each other over conservation issues in the next University Forum lecture scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The discussion will be held at UNLV in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. For more information, call 895-3401.
