Trial begins in officer’s lawsuit alleging racism

Melvin Gentry claims less-qualified white police officers were promote over him to sergeant in 1997.
Gentry was promoted to that rank in November. His suit seeks damages for loss of pay, benefits and seniority he would have accrued if he had been promoted in 1997.
The trial being heard by a six-person jury is expected to last two to three weeks.
