Letter: Anti-gay initiative designed to impose religious beliefs
Friday, Jan. 28, 2000 | 9:28 a.m.
I'm hoping your readers are aware that the anti-gay initiative is designed to change Nevada's Constitution.
This petition is not about defending marriage, but attacking gays and lesbians. Male/female marriages are recognized, so this is unnecessary. (It's already the law in Nevada.)
It's a scare tactic to say that churches could be forced to perform marriages they do not agree with. The only aspect of marriage that the government can control is what legal rights and responsibilities the couple obtains.
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution forbids the government from telling churches who they must join together in matrimony. Its called "freedom of religion."
So please don't impose your religious beliefs on me.
