No Supreme Court rehearing for former trooper charged with murder

Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000 | 10:53 a.m.

CARSON CITY - The Nevada Supreme Court refused Thursday to review its December order reviving the case against a former Nevada Highway Patrol trooper accused of killing his wife.

The high court ruled against George Warner, whose fifth wife, Carol, died in a 1989 mobile home fire. The one-line order affirms the court's earlier ruling that Warner's trial should be conducted "with all deliberate speed."

The December ruling overturned a May 1998 decision by Clark County District Judge Jeffrey Sobel to dismiss the case following an evidentiary hearing.

Warner, a nine-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, resigned soon after he was indicted on arson and first-degree murder charges. That indictment was thrown out for procedural reasons.

A second grand jury failed to indict. A third grand jury indicted him in 1994.

In other action, the Supreme Court:

Truong had pleaded guilty in the stabbing death of Lisa Sadie in October 1996, a few days after he had been fired from his food server job at the restaurant. On appeal, he contended his plea was involuntary.

Prosecutors argued during Mulder's trial that he was a drug addict who beat John Ahart to death and stole his car, jewelry and other belongings from his mobile home.
