Influenza comes to the valley; cases surge in LV, Henderson

Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000 | 10:15 a.m.

The National Flu Surveillance Network has issued an influenza alert for Nevada, with flu cases jumping in Las Vegas and Henderson.

The network has received reports of positive flu diagnosis by doctors across the state, network spokeswoman Jane Braden said.

Physicians are recording a 66 percent increase in reported flu cases in Las Vegas and a surge in Henderson.

An influenza warning is issued when a flu test comes up positive in daily doctor's offices. An alert is sent out if the cases are discovered every other day, and a watch is called when there are two confirmed cases in a region, Braden said.

The United States flu season typically runs from November to April and the illness is spread through casual contact. Symptoms include fever, cough, headache, muscle aches and weakness.

Influenza can be potentially fatal, especially among individuals with chronic illnesses, compromised immune systems, the elderly, children and pregnant women.
