Contests
Two contests are being offered for students in Clark County schools -- for both the artistic and the money-minded.
Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate in the 2000 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Contest.
The contest is designed to increase conservation awareness toward North America's wetlands among youth through an educational curriculum that incorporates art and wildlife management principles.
Entries must be original, hand-created drawings -- not computer-generated -- of North American ducks, geese or swans. A panel of Nevada judges will select first, second and third place and honorable mention winners from each age group.
There are four age groups: kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grade, seventh through ninth grade and 10th through 12th grade. Winning artists will receive ribbons and prizes. All entrants will receive a certificate of appreciation.
Guidelines can be obtained by calling Donna Withers, the Nevada Junior Duck Stamp Coordinator at (775) 423-5128.
Pre-registration is also under way for the Nevada Stock Market Game which runs Feb. 14 through April 21. The game and registration are located on the Internet at www.smgww.org.
The game is geared for grades 5 through 12. Prizes are distributed to the top five teams in three divisions: elementary school, middle school and high school.
Last spring's winner was featured in several national business periodicals.
Teachers who are new to the stock market game must attend one of the training workshops. Teachers are asked to e-mail John Mundy at UNLV at jmundy@ccmail.nevada.edu, and indicate their preference for a workshop time.
Workshops are scheduled for the Clark County School District on Friday, Jan. 28 and Monday, Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., UNLV College of Business computer lab, Room 100B.
