Letter: Don’t let Nevada become hate state

Namely in this instance, the law that permits one man and one woman to enter into marriage.
I am constantly perplexed by those who allow themselves to be entrenched in such mundane issues, when they could be providing positive change with far more pressing needs, such as hunger, homelessness and tending to the needs of our senior citizens.
As to the issue of marriage, it seems to me that with the divorce rate, child support and alimony payments existing at such staggering levels, the so-called straight community has managed to demonstrate its failure in this endeavor without any help from gays or lesbians.
As one who lived in Colorado for nearly 20 years I have seen what fear and paranoia can lead to. I love Nevada and would truly be saddened if it were to become known as another hate state.
Please don't allow yourselves to be used as pawns by religious zealots and others who apparently have nothing better to do than create a climate of divisiveness based upon their own self-described puritanical belief system.
