Kentucky gambling expansion opponents ‘not giving up our vigilance’

Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000 | 8:51 a.m.

"We're not giving up our vigilance on this," the Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper, spokeswoman for Citizens Against Gambling Expansion, said Tuesday.

"We'll do what we must to stop the slots," she said.

About 50 members of the group were at the Capitol to buttonhole legislators and make a public show of force in the Rotunda.

House Speaker Jody Richards said he personally opposed additional gambling. "I think we have enough things on which to gamble today, and we don't need any more," Richards, D-Bowling Green, told the group.

Gov. Paul Patton floated the idea of land-based casinos to raise money for land preservation, the thoroughbred industry and urban renovation. Some think Patton used the prospect of casinos to escalate the debate and that the actual goal was to allow the lottery or race tracks to have slot machines.

Richards said it was unlikely, though not impossible, that some stab at slot machines could be made in the current session of the General Assembly.

"I just don't see any sentiment, particularly in our house," Richards said, adding: "You never say never."
