Council to consider hosting event in April
Promoters want to see Boulder City become the host of a speed boat race that could become an annual event, but the City Council decided it wanted more information before committing.
The Las Vegas Millennium 2000 Regatta is tentatively scheduled for April 22 and 23 at Lake Mead, with limited class hydroplanes battling each other at speeds of 100 mph.
Event organizers went before the council Tuesday asking for $15,000 to help promote the event, that they say would bring money into Boulder City.
'It sounds like a great idea, but it's an idea that could work or flop," Councilman Bryan Nix said. "Fifteen-thousand won't break the city, but I think we have to be very careful here."
The council decided to have the organizers meet with city staff to determine the specifics of the event and if there is a way that the city could support the event other than financially.
Conversion of old post office considered
Boulder City residents may soon have a new place to meet for City Council and community meetings.
The council approved an agenda item at Tuesday night's meeting that will allow the city to solicit architectural drawings to determine if moving the council chambers to the city's former post office is feasible.
The old post office is currently used as storage by the town's museum, and if converted into council chambers would probably seat an audience of about 215 people, City Manager John Sullard said.
"There have been times that we've had people out in the hall because we couldn't fit them in the meetings," Sullard said.
