Nevada to get revamped driver’s education pamphlets

Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000 | 10:45 a.m.

A new driver's handbook geared toward Nevada youth was introduced by Assemblywoman Barbara K. Cegavske, R-Las Vegas, Monday at the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety, 8250 W. Flamingo Road.

The 20-page booklet titled "Driving for Your Life -- A Guide for Students, Parents and Teachers" includes real stories from parents who lost children to car accidents in which a teenager was driving recklessly.

The booklet also explains Assembly Bill 404 that was passed in 1997 by Nevada State Legislature. The bill requires that everyone under the age of 18 have at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel experience before receiving a driver's licence and that most people under the age of 18 who are living in urban areas complete a driver's education course before obtaining a license.

The booklet states that auto crashes are the number one killer of teenagers in Nevada and includes statistics of drivers under the age of 18 who are involved in a variety of automobile crashes, including drug and alcohol-related crashes.

The handbooks will be distributed in high schools Clark County, Carson City and Washoe County. Some will be available at local DMV offices.
