Nevada student receives award in Colorado

Henderson resident Noma Thayer was awarded the Eastern Shoshone Scholarship in the amount of $4,000.

Thayer, a freshman at Colorado State University, is a biological science major in the College of Natural Sciences and graduated from Basic High School in Henderson.

Thayer was also awarded the Distinguished Scholars Award from Colorado State.

LV resident, Olympian named to Top 100 list

Bill Rosado, a Las Vegas businessman and former two-time Olympic wrestler was recently named one of Arizona's Top 100 Athletes of the Century by the Arizona Republic Newspaper.

Rosado, president and owner of Managed Pay, a payroll and professional employer services company, was a member of the 1976 and 1980 U.S. Olympic Wrestling teams.

The newspaper cited Rosado as a "5-foot-5, 105.5 pound dynamo taking apart opponents with Swiss-watch-like efficiency."

Rosado, who received other international awards and was named All-American at Arizona State, now coaches wrestling.

B of A Foundation receives philanthropic honors

Worth Magazine named Bank of America Foundation as top corporate giver in a survey of the 500 largest publicly held corporations in America.

The survey was based on the total dollar value of a company's charitable giving in 1998. With $92 million in donations, Bank of America was the leader. In Nevada the bank contributed $400,000 in 1998 and more than $524,000 to date.

Results of the survey were based on a study done by the Council on Economic Priorities and are featured in the December/January edition of Worth.

Cancer center gets network sponsorship

Sunrise Center for Cancer Rehabilitation at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center was recently approved for sponsorship by the National Lymphedema Network.

National Lymphedema Network is based in San Francisco. Its sponsored facilities treat patients and teach them how to treat themselves.

Sunrise is one of 113 sponsored facilities in the United States.

Lymphedema is a circulatory disease that can cause severe swelling in a patients arms or legs caused by an accumulation of lymph fluid. There is no cure, but it can be treated and controlled.

Nevada teachers receive award for dedication

Four Nevada teachers were recognized for their outstanding dedication to their students by the Milken Family Foundation's National Educator Award.

The 1999 recipients are Don M. Curry from Silverado High School, Diane Koutsulis from Green Valley High School, Joe De Braga from Spring Creek High School in Spring Creek and and Eric Anderson from Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City.

Sixty-two Nevada teachers have won the award since the award began in 1988.

Caregivers meetings to change locations

A new location has been secured for the CareGivers Support Group sponsored by Nevada Ester Seal Society. The group is open to all persons who care for a person who has any sort of an illness or disability. The purpose of the group is to provide support, information and resources to CareGivers. The next meeting will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday in the conference room of the Rainbow Library, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive. Immunizations

Health District immunization clinics are open each week in and around Las Vegas. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week: Wednesday through Feb. 1.

DISTRICT HEALTH CENTER: 625 Shadow Lane, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

NORTH LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 3262 Civic Center Drive, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

HENDERSON PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 129 W. Lake Mead Drive, Building A, Suite 10, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
