Casino operator offers Internet wagering

Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000 | 11:25 a.m.

A San Diego Internet company announced today it signed an agreement to develop an Internet-based sports wagering system for Coast Resorts Inc. of Las Vegas.

The system, which will be accessible only within the state of Nevada, will be submitted to the Nevada Gaming Control Board for approval in February, said Virtgame.com. It is expected to begin operating by summer.

Leo George, chairman of Virtgame.com, called the system "a landmark in the evolution of legalized online gaming."

With the system, Coast Resorts account holders will be able to place wagers through the company's website by reviewing a menu of wagers and clicking on selections. The system is designed to prevent the wagering system from being accessed by anyone outside of Nevada.

"We believe that the added convenience and the unique experience offered will attract new players to our service," said Michael Gaughan, chief executive of Coast Resorts.

Coast owns and operates the Gold Coast, Barbary Coast and Orleans hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. It is currently building Suncoast, a Summerlin hotel-casino set for completion later this year.
