Heavenly patrol will not join union

Thursday's 37-17 vote was hailed by Heavenly management, which gave the ski patrol its biggest salary increase ever at the start of the ski season.
"Quite frankly, it's a tremendous vote of confidence in the resort," said Heavenly lawyer John Feldman. "Heavenly is very pleased and we want to move forward."
A delay in the vote and the addition of 17 new members to the ski patrol hurt the union, said Lou Martino, chief executive officer of Teamsters Local 533.
The large raise also may have influenced the vote, he said, adding he believes the increase was in response to employees' effort to organize.
"In a roundabout way the union has helped these people without actually representing them," Martino said.
