Despite opposition from nearby residents, on Wednesday the Clark County Commission consented to a zoning change that will allow a casino to be built in Spring Valley. For more than 10 years now, the Legislature has attempted to stem the proliferation of neighborhood casinos by restricting where they are located. Yet, as everyone knows, these casinos keep cropping up close to residential areas.
While neighborhood casinos are popular with some local residents, many Las Vegans are tired of seeing a casino everywhere they turn, especially those that are too close to their homes. The next session of the Legislature will need to revisit this law and, where necessary, tighten the restrictions so that casinos don't jeopardize the character of the valley's residential areas.
