LV Film Critics Society honors ‘Beauty,’ ‘Boys’

The Las Vegas Film Critics Society recently selected "American Beauty," as best picture and that film's star, Kevin Spacey, as best actor for its 1999 movie awards.
Also honored was Hilary Swank as best actress and Kimberly Pierce as best director for "Boys Don't Cry," Haley Joel Osment as best supporting actor for "The Sixth Sense" and Chloe Sevigny as best supporting actress for "Boys Don't Cry."
Jack Lemmon was honored with the William Holden Lifetime Achievement Award.
In its third year, the LVFCS is made up of a six-person panel that includes Jeff Howard (the organization's president) and David Neil, the Sun's Movie Guys, as well as Carol Cling of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Victoria Alexander of Films in Review, Jeannette Catsoulis of Las Vegas Weekly and Paisley Yankolovich of the Paisley Press.
Following is a complete list of the LVFCS's award winners, to be honored during a formal ceremony Feb. 24 at a site to be determined:
Best picture: "American Beauty."
Best director: Kimberly Pierce, "Boys Don't Cry."
Best actor: Kevin Spacey, "American Beauty."
Best actress: Hilary Swank, "Boys Don't Cry."
Best supporting actress: Chloe Sevigny, "Boys Don't Cry."
Best original screenplay: Charlie Kaufman, "Being John Malkovich."
Best adapted screenplay: Kimberly Pierce and Andy Bienen, "Boys Don't Cry."
Best score: John Williams, "Angela's Ashes."
Best song: "Beautiful Stranger," Madonna and William Obit, from "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."
Best cinematography: Robert Richardson, "Snow Falling On Cedars."
Best film editing: Eric Zumbrunnen, "Being John Malkovich."
Best documentary: "Trekkies."
Best costume design: "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace."
Best foreign film: "Autumn Tale."
Best animated film: "The Iron Giant."
Best visual effects: John Gaela, "The Matrix."
Best production design: Rick Hendrichs, "Sleepy Hollow."
Most promising actor: Haley Joel Osment, "The Sixth Sense."
Most promising actress: Hilary Swank, "Boys Don't Cry."
Best Newcomer: Spike Jonze, "Being John Malkovich."
Youth in Film Award: Haley Joel Osment, "The Sixth Sense."
Best home video packaging/content: "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," New Line Cinema Home Video Platinum Collection.
Best Las Vegas theater: Century Orleans.
