Letter: IRL cars might be the problem
Friday, Jan. 21, 2000 | 11:26 a.m.
Regarding Brian Hilderbrand's story on auto racing spinal-cord injuries: Dr. Steve Olvey may be right about how an impact relates to an injury, but I think his theory that impact points have changed (from frontal impact to rear) due to increased speeds is something of a lunge after a point. Almost all the rump-to-wall hits in the recent past have been in IRL iron. These cars have been noticeably quick to snap around under load. This sort of accident really has no compatible data from other similar series such as CART or Formula One.
