Letter: Bayno loyal to the Rebels
Friday, Jan. 21, 2000 | 11:29 a.m.
I think Rebel fans need to remember how far down the UNLV program had fallen before Billy Bayno agreed to take the coaching post five years ago. A coaching post, lest we forget, that nobody wanted at the time it was offered.
There is something to be said for loyalty and commitment. Bill Bayno has demonstrated a high level of energy, focus, and commitment to UNLV and now, when times are a bit rocky, it's time for Rebel fans to show some class and stop clamoring for his head.
Yes, Bayno is young and still learning his craft. But he runs a reasonably clean program and has attracted some top-flight talent.
UNLV has had and continues to have a national image problem left over from the Tarkanian era, and the program must still survive another bout with the NCAA. Given those realities, it would be wise to stay the course and allow Bayno and Max Good, who was brought in to bolster the bench, to continue to develop this young team while keeping the program off NCAA probation.
