Fund-raising comes easy for mayor, report shows

Friday, Jan. 21, 2000 | 11:56 a.m.

Although Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has not said whether he will seek a second term in office, he will certainly be able to raise money if he opts for another four years.

Campaign contribution reports filed Tuesday with the city clerk's office show Goodman raised $139,100 between July and the end of 1999 -- all after he was sworn in to office last June.

The largest single donations of $10,000 each came from Howard Hughes Properties LP and Howard Hughes Properties Inc.

Caesars Palace, Superpawn, Excalibur, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Luxor, Wanda Lamb Peccole, G.C. Wallace Inc. and Westward Ho Properties each gave $5,000.

Las Vegas Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald leads the pack in fund-raising for future council elections. Secretary of State records filed Tuesday show Boggs McDonald raised $20,482 in 1999 for an election still more than a year away.

Station Casinos donated $2,256, Las Vegas Color Graphics gave $3,226 and A-North Las Vegas Cab Company owner Charlie Frias donated $2,000. She received $1,000 donations from several local developers and from American Medical Response.

The report is now required of all public officials statewide for campaign contributions that exceed $10,000 in a nonelection year.

A second report showing the disposition of unspent contributions shows that Councilmen Michael McDonald and Gary Reese each have some money left over from their council races last year.

McDonald lists $30,689 left unspent after his primary election win last May. Reese lists $17,204 in surplus campaign funds.
