Outcall operator ruled competent

The operator of a Las Vegas outcall service has been ruled mentally competent to assist the defense in his extortion case.
U.S. District Judge Philip Pro had ordered the mental examination last November for Christiano DeCarlo.
Officials say DeCarlo, 28, had attempted to commit suicide last October by overdosing on sleeping pills at the North Las Vegas Detention Center.
DeCarlo was evaluated at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Mo.
DeCarlo is one of six defendants indicted in October 1998. Authorities say the six were involved in a conspiracy, backed by the New York Gambino crime family, to take over the outcall service industry in Las Vegas through extortion.
Outcall services send male and female dancers to customers, usually in hotel rooms.
