Man shot by Reno police was prison camp escapee
Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 | 11:57 a.m.
Daniel Lopez, 21, Escondido, Calif., had been staying off and on with his parents in Sparks since he escaped from the camp, police said.
Lopez was shot in the chest on Monday after he led police on a chase in a stolen car and waved a gun at police. Police said he then shot himself in the head.
Deputy Police Chief Jim Weston originally reported that the shot fired by Lieutenant Ron Donnelly was to the shoulder and probably would not have proven fatal to Lopez.
But police said an autopsy determined the officer's shot probably would have killed Lopez because it passed through his lung and heart.
