Alzheimer's patient found in ravine
The Clark County coroner's office has identified the body of a man found dead at the bottom of a 40-foot drop in a desert area of Green Valley as an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Antonio Albitos, 89, was last seen on Nov. 26, 1999, walking near Vo-Tech High School, 5710 Mountain Vista St., Henderson Police said.
Albitos' body was found by two boys in some bushes at the base of a ravine that runs along the back side of Vo-Tech.
Goodman's measure takes step forward
A proposed ordinance that would make it illegal to transport high-level nuclear waste within the city limits took another step toward adoption today despite concerns that it may be unconstitutional.
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman's bill cleared the council's Recommending Committee by a 5-1 vote Tuesday. Councilman Michael McDonald was the lone dissenter, and Councilman Gary Reese was absent.
The bill faced its second official "reading" before the full council today and is eligible for adoption Feb. 2.
Last week the district attorney's office gave an opinion that the proposed ordinance is unconstitutional and runs contrary to interstate transit laws over which local government have no authority.
County votes to give LV more control
The County Commission voted Tuesday to give the city of Las Vegas equal say in any administrative action involving the Metro Police civilian review board.
Tuesday's action allows the review board to move forward.
The Las Vegas City Council had approved the review board ordinance on the condition that it also be given the authority to terminate the executive director of the board.
County Commissioner Erin Kenny had initially indicated she would vote against allowing the city equal say. However, Kenny did not attend Tuesday's meeting and did not vote on the matter.
