Defendant sent to juvenile hall

Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000 | 11:19 a.m.

A shroud of secrecy has been draped over the murder case of 15-year-old Conan Pope, who faces charges as an adult that he shot his father to death.

Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo last week ordered him released from jail and held on house arrest at a friend's house pending resolution of murder charges in the shooting death of his father.

But the judge has since rescinded that order and sent the teenager to the county's juvenile detention facility pending a Friday hearing, which he has closed to the public although Nevada law requires criminal proceedings be conducted in public.

Abbatangelo also issued a gag order prohibiting attorneys from talking about the case and ordered all records be sealed.

Pope is charged with murder in the Jan. 6 incident during what the defendant and his sister said began as a tirade over dirty dishes by 62-year-old Frank Pope when he arrived home about 6 p.m.
