Guy Education Center to celebrate additions

A reception to launch two new computer programs at the A.D. Guy Education Center, 817 N. N St., will be held 6-7 p.m. today.

The Community College of Southern Nevada added the programs through its Community, Rural and Distance Education Division.

The Computer Technology Center is a drop-in computing center open to the public and offers a trained staff, self-paced tutorials in computer basics and GED and English as a second language programs.

Pro Prep is a program that helps to prepare students for the High School Proficiency Exam by offering computer-based learning.

'Chicago' singer will visit UNLV class

The Performing Arts Society of Nevada, the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the UNLV Music Department are jointly sponsoring an afternoon master class on Monday featuring David Sabella, countertenor.

The class is open to all vocal teachers, students and the general public. All attending will have the opportunity to meet Sabella, a featured lead singer with "Chicago" at the close of the class.

The master class will be held 4:30 p.m. Monday in the UNLV Music Department building, Room 147. There is no admission charge. For more information, call 658-6741.

Home builder will host adoption day

Home builder Kaufman & Broad is making it easier for homeowners to add a pet to the family home.

From noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Kaufman & Broad and the Animal Foundation International will hold a pet adoption party for homeless pets at the home builder's new community Hillsborough, 1083 Devon Lake St., off Hollywood Boulevard and Bonanza Road. Call 739-9933.

Saturday class teaches how not to be a victim

The next "Refuse to Be a Victim" safety seminar will be Saturday at Nevada Dodge off U.S. 95 at Ann Road.

The three-hour course will be taught by certified instructor Kent Mason, who educates individuals on how to prepare a personal defense strategy to protect themselves against becoming a victim of a violent crime.

The courses offer the latest training in home, phone, automobile and physical security. Understanding the psychology of criminal predators is also part of the seminar.

The cost is $10 and includes a workbook. For more information, call Kent Mason at 225-5253.

Next program set at West LV Arts Center

Poets and poetry lovers are invited to the Poets' Corner, hosted by Keith Brantley and Pendelita Toney 7 p.m. Friday at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

The program, presented by the Cultural and Community Affairs Division of the Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, is held throughout the year. Call 229-4800 for more information.

Jewish center hosts 'Honey on the Page'

"Honey on the Page" is a Judaic tradition being offered on three Monday evenings, Jan. 24-Feb. 7, at the Jewish Community Center, 3909 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 400.

When a student begins the study of the Torah, the teacher places a drop of honey on the page and when the honey is tasted, the student associates the sweet taste with the sweetness of learning. For more information about this program, call 794-0090.
