Cleanup of tainted soil could cost $25 million

In what is expected to be the biggest reclamation project in Nevada history, some 1 million cubic yards of tainted soil will be removed from the Las Vegas Wash at a projected cost of $25 million.
The soil, from chemical ponds used by Henderson factories since World War II, will be moved to an old landfill in Black Mountain Industrial Park.
The cleanup project must be aproved by the Clark County Commission.
Work could begin within two months once approval is given.
A prior plan, which called for trucking the dirt to the Apex landfill, northeast of Las Vegas, would have cost $50 million.
The dirt is laced with traces of heavy metals, solvents and pesticides.
The old industries operated as the Basic Management Industrial complex on an island of Clark County land in the middle of Henderson.
