Starting from the governor's mansion in Carson City, the "Mammovan" will head to Reno, Fernley, Yerington and other communities. Dema Guinn, wife of Gov. Kenny Guinn, will be on board for part of the startup trip.
Staffers won't do any actual examinations until the rig is licensed by the state. That's expected by early February, when the van arrives in Las Vegas.
The mobile health center will be in the Las Vegas area until June, and will be back in northern Nevada in July.
Shirley Fehr, a nurse with the Nevada Rural Health Centers Inc., said the truck, complete with X-ray and examination rooms, will be at special events and in low-income neighborhoods in all counties.
In addition to mammography, it will provide Pap smears, osteoporosis screening and screening for diabetes, hypertension, colo-rectal cancer and prostate cancer.
