Man allegedly kills self after shot by Reno police
Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000 | 9:29 a.m.
The shootings were under investigation by the Reno and Sparks police departments.
Neither the dead man nor the police lieutenant who fired the shot at an apartment complex Monday afternoon has been identified.
Weston said the officer shot the suspect from about 50 feet away and hit him in the shoulder.
"It was a pretty long shot," Weston said.
Immediately after that, the man turned his semi-automatic pistol on himself. He died from a gunshot wound to the head, Weston said.
A chase began near the Reno Police Department about 3:30 p.m. Monday when the suspect was driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
He fled police and crashed into a truck, then waded across the Truckee River toward an apartment complex, Weston said.
The suspect started waving a gun and refused to drop it when officers confronted him on a balcony.
The car was reported stolen in Reno in October, Weston said.
