Letter: Rebels should follow Cougars
Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 | 12:25 p.m.
As a UNLV graduate attending law school at BYU, Monday night's two-point Rebel loss to BYU was particularly hard to swallow. It is inexcusable for a head coach to be suspended for his team's conference home opener, regardless of the reason.
After being a loyal Bill Bayno supporter, I must agree with those who are calling for his termination at the end of the season. He has had plenty of time to rebuild the once-proud Rebel dynasty and, once again, the university, fans, and community must suffer through yet another dismal and disappointing season.
The Rebel loss to BYU is a case in point of the potential a basketball program is capable of achieving under competent leadership. BYU coach Steve Cleveland inherited a Cougar basketball team that won only one game its previous season and within three years, he has built the one-time conference doormat into a viable MWC contender.
