Holiday closings

The holiday honoring slain civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be observed Monday, even though he actually was born Jan. 15, 1929. In 1986 King's birthday became a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in January. Here's what is open and closed on Monday:

SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.

UTILITIES: Closed: Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Cable. Open: Sprint, Southwest Gas.

GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.

SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District, Community College of Southern Nevada, UNLV.

MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service (however, Post Office Express sites in local Raley's stores will be open). Open, deliveries as usual: United Parcel Service.

NEWSPAPER: Sun offices open, afternoon editions published and delivered as usual.

TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (one less trolley in operation). Citizen Area Transit: Holiday schedule (fewer buses in operation on fixed routes).

LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, North Las Vegas District, Henderson District. Open: Boulder City Municipal.

GARBAGE: Silver State Disposal pickups as usual.

MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing 12 a.m. Tuesday.

FINANCIAL: Closed: Banks, brokerage firms.

ZOO: Open: Southern Nevada Zoological Botanical Park.

PARKING: City's parking metered spaces free.
