Nevada deserves representation on Congress' more important committees, and if Democrats are successful in taking back the House, Rep. Shelley Berkley would be a likely choice, House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt said Thursday.
"If we take the House back, this young woman has a chance to get a seat on the House Ways and Means Committee if she so chooses," Gephardt said during a morning press conference.
Gephardt, D-Mo., was in Las Vegas Thursday not only to bring attention to President Clinton's Medicare reform proposal but to gain support for Berkley, D-Nev., as she pursues her second term in office.
Following the Medicare press conference, Gephardt and Berkley met with the Nevada Resort Association and attended a $500 a person luncheon at Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce President Bob Forbus' home.
The luncheon raised $25,000, Berkley said.
"I'm very appreciative of the fact (Gephardt) came to Las Vegas to help me," Berkley said. "I'm pleased he took the time and cared enough about me and the people in my district to come here."
