Nevada government services to be available on Internet

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000 | 9:22 a.m.

Guinn said he's creating an E-Government Coordinating Council to help develop an e-commerce program for the state. He wants agencies linked to the system to have necessary forms for the public available via the Internet by April 30.

"The Internet has changed the way business is done in Nevada, across the country and throughout the world," Guinn said. "I want to make sure Nevada's government adequately responds to the changes new technology has brought to our society."

The proposal was detailed at a state Board of Examiners meeting by Guinn's information technology chief, Marlene Lockard. She said the goal is to ensure that state agencies have Internet web pages, with online forms that people can access if necessary.

Agencies that will be involved in the system include the state Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety, now working on a system that will let people register vehicles over the Internet.

The DMV's efforts to get into online services were speeded up as the agency struggled in recent months to adapt to a new, problem-plagued computer system that resulted in long lines and numerous errors.

In addition to new technology to let motorists renew vehicle registrations and driver's licenses by telephone or the Internet, the department is working to let smog check stations in Reno and Las Vegas process car registrations.
