Letter: Make casinos pay more taxes
Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000 | 9:36 a.m.
Now that we are looking for new tax revenues needed to finance growth caused by the casinos, wouldn't it be proper to make these same casinos pay a little more in gaming taxes?
I understand our gaming taxes are the lowest in the country. This has enabled our casinos to take their huge profits out of Las Vegas and build casinos elsewhere, even internationally.
After our humiliating New Year's performance seen by a reported one billion people worldwide, it is apparent that the casinos are not willing to return anything to the residents who have given so much and the tourists who came with such great expectations.
Didn't we also give Steve Wynn a sales tax break in the millions on his art purchases? Wasn't this at the time when Nevada was short of revenue?
Go to it, Joe Neal, and hopefully most of Nevada is behind you.
